The New York Times

Express Reporter, General Assignment/Breaking News
The Express Desk of The New York Times has an opening for a general assignment reporter based in New York City. Express is a 24/7 global breaking news desk that covers spot news and also assists other news desks on major stories. Expect to work some night, holiday and weekend shifts. Candidates must have a strong grasp of usage and style rules, research and fact-checking, and be able to deliver clean copy on tight deadlines. A record of accuracy is a must. The ideal candidates have experience with general assignment reporting, rewrite editing, blogging and live news coverage, and are able to write with wit, authority and a conversational style. Headline writing and social media skills are a big plus. Be self-motivated with your own story ideas, but also be willing to take an editor’s idea and make it better. We seek generalists who are comfortable with all manner of topics, from disasters and criminal matters to more offbeat and lighter social stories. If people are talking about it, we’re interested. Creativity, a team sensibility and collegiality are a must.
