The Express Desk, a general assignment and breaking news hub at The New York Times, has an opening for a senior staff editor on its New York-based team. If you're looking for an experience on the front lines of breaking news, one that blends editing, reporting and writing skills, this opportunity is for you. You will join a close-knit team in spotting and tracking breaking news and other worthy stories for The Times to cover. We cooperate closely with all the news desks, particularly on major news events that cross Newsroom boundaries. The ideal candidate has wide interest in every sort of news topic and the ability to quickly build subject expertise. A sophisticated understanding of the Newsroom’s processes and culture are important. You will be asked to collaborate and deconflict coverage lines with other desks, as well as mentor reporters and fellows who are learning to navigate the Newsroom. We have a broad definition of news, with a focus on social and search audiences, on just about every subject The Times covers. Our work includes spot news stories, briefings and live blogs in consultation with the Live Desk, explainers, timelines, brights, newsy features, online/social stories, visual stories and more. Our commitment to finding new audiences for The Times means the story does not end when we publish; that's when we are just getting started. The ideal candidate has several years of news editing experience, including work as an editor in The Times Newsroom. Our editors handle every aspect of the story: brainstorming coverage, coaching and assigning reporters, handling first/second edits and digital production, running live news coverage, and framing social and other promotional language. Mandatory skills required: Strong line editing, New York Times style knowledge, the ability to write tight, compelling headlines and social media copy remote communication skills and diplomacy, and comfort with a variety of publishing tools. While editing will be the primary responsibility, you will have occasional opportunities to report and write stories if that is an interest. This Guild position involves some night and weekend work. We are committed to work-life balance and schedule stability.
