The Flex desk, The Times’s equivalent of an editing SWAT team, has an opening for a senior staff editor who can provide critical editing assistance to virtually every other department in the newsroom, at all hours of the day seven days a week. Schedules will vary, and night and weekend work will be required. Flex editors must be capable of stepping in at all stages of the editing process, from a story’s conception through its publication. They fill in frequently for editors in other departments and regularly handle second edits of articles from desks like Express, Science and Politics along with videos and social media copy. They must be as adept at working on live briefings and digital-only newsletters as they are at editing front-page enterprise. Flex editors should be well versed in the full range of our report. They should be masters of language who can edit articles to the style and standards of The Times. The ideal candidates will have experience working independently and should understand how to set priorities when breaking news demands attention. They should be calm under pressure, comfortable being the last set of eyes on an assignment before publication and proficient with all aspects of digital production, including display type and social promotion.
