The New York Times

Senior Staff Editor, Health & Science
Times Opinion is looking for an editor to lead its health and science coverage. This is a critical role in Opinion, with the potential to shape the debate over how to handle the coronavirus pandemic. This includes the science: how should vaccines be developed and distributed? The social effects: how will isolation affect kids? And the issues of equity: how can the racial disparities be eased?

This editor needs to be creative and ambidextrous -- able to work with the world’s leading scientists to help them make their case to the world, as well as with teachers, families and social scientists to dig into how the pandemic has changed our lives.

This editor will work with Opinion’s editors and writers, as well as our award-winning graphics and video teams to develop storytelling that’s urgent, heart-tugging and accessible.

We’re looking for someone with wide-ranging experience and sharp editorial judgment, who feels comfortable digging into academic studies and analyzing advances in science and medicine, but who can also help academics and researchers translate their academic writing into clear, digestible prose. The editor will also be responsible for covering other health and science news. A background in science or health journalism is a plus but not a requirement; a passion for the subject is. This editor must be a team player, able to collaborate with other editors and our audience team to find ways to deepen our engagement with Times readers and find new audiences for our work.
