First published in May 2017, The New York Times for Kids is a beloved monthly print section that helps young readers understand the world at large and meets them where they are. The New York Times is looking for an Assistant Editor to join the NYT Kids team as it builds a new digital product: a “How-To” app that will inspire and guide kids to create, build, do and learn. The assistant editor’s primary job will be to help shape best-in-class how-to content for kids (think “How to Get a Coronavirus Test,” “How to Make a Rubber Egg,” “How to Design an Escape Room” and beyond), whether that be reporting, writing, researching, testing or editing. The assistant editor will also contribute to the print section. The best candidates will have strong journalism backgrounds with some experience assigning, editing and packaging short-form journalism (experience with kid content is not a prerequisite). A proven ability to work across and within teams and a knack for working closely with design are all keys to success in this job. The person in this role will report to the Editorial Director of The New York Times for Kids and be a core member of our edit team.
