Corporate External Communication Intern

To help us do this essential work, The New York Times is hiring an External Communications Intern. The person in this role will join our External Communications team and be responsible for assisting the team with all aspects of the media relations ecosystem, from researching media pitches and compiling data-driven media coverage reports to project managing media relations efforts. The External Communications Intern will also create content for a variety of digital and multimedia platforms and vehicles, telling stories that embody the spirit, strength of character and mission of The Times.

We are looking for a talented and creative individual with a strong interest in public relations who is resourceful and can work at a fast pace to support external communications efforts across all facets of our organization.

Responsibilities:

Maintain media lists, track media coverage, help compile press coverage reports.

Assist with media inquiries, including coordination of interviews from our newsroom camera, radio interviews from newsroom ISDN line and on-site filming of interviews.

Pitch stories to relevant media outlets and perform public relations research at the direction of External Communications staff.

Draft content for a broad range of communications and channels, including digital, print, reports, presentations, newsletters, videos, etc.

Collaborate with creative professionals to develop multimedia content, including graphics, social and web posts, long-form narratives and videos.

Coordinate executive photos with the photo desk; help maintain photos and bios of all Times employees.

Organize and help compile data driven reports on the successes and challenges of the external team’s media relations efforts.

Basic Qualifications:

Undergraduate student focused on Communications, Public Relations, Media Relations, Project Management, or Writing; a strategic thinker with a strong interest in media relations.

Experienced writer and content creator

Preferred Qualifications:

Team player and collaborator with strong communication and interpersonal skills who builds connections across the organization that contribute to creating a strong pipeline of media relations opportunities, content and stories.

A creative thinker who takes initiative to execute tasks efficiently and at high speed.

Familiarity with data software tools

About Our Summer Internships

The duration is 10 weeks long, starting on June 3, 2024.

The rate of pay for this role is $20.00 per hour.

Interns work 35 hours per week.

This is a hybrid position that must be completed onsite at our office in New York
