Deputy Editor, Headway

New Posted 24 January 2021 | New York, NY | The New York Times

The Headway team is seeking a visionary editor who can drive and shape stories from their inceptions in reporters’ notepads to their final forms as ambitious projects that reframe our understanding of the world.

This editor will assign and steer these deep-dive projects for Headway, an initiative focusing on building better, more equitable places and societies. Headway will tackle a range of economic, social, health and environmental problems that are redrawing the map of human habitation. The projects it produces will take different forms. Headway aims to produce 10 to 12 of them a year: deeply researched, visually and data rich, with a strong and distinct narrative voice, that look beyond the 24-hour news and election cycles.

The ideal candidate should have several years of experience delivering groundbreaking stories with marquee writers and should have a firm grasp of a range of policy issues. This editor should also be a masterful story doctor who has an ear for vivid detail, narrative arcs and character building that bring complex issues to life. We are looking for an editor with a Rolodex of great writers who is excited about the opportunity to deepen conversation and public debate through these projects and through a new public square that will exist online and via in-person events. Headway is a new three-year public service editorial initiative funded by philanthropic foundations.
