Editor, The Daily

New Posted 9 January 2024 | New York, NY | The New York Times

The New York Times Audio team is hiring an editor for The Daily. The show gives listeners everything they need to know about one story to start each day. Episodes range from breaking news episodes produced in a matter of hours, to complicated narratives produced over days and weeks. Strong candidates will be skilled at, and have a passion for, every aspect of longform narrative audio editing — from structuring an episode, to identifying when pacing is off, to knowing which beats of an episode can be cut, to catching a stray breath that should be removed, to guiding hosts and guests during a taping, to hearing when a music cue is coming in too early.

Editors on The Daily also need to have strong news judgment, a sense of the news cycle – and an interest in telling stories creatively. The right candidate is an autonomous, curious, collaborative thinker who is comfortable in a deadline-driven environment. The editor will work with and guide producers in determining what stories we tell and which reporters we work with. They should be able to stake out, refine and troubleshoot an angle on a story, and to gauge the level of production, time and resources required to realize that vision. Ideally, they will have experience working closely and well with hosts.

Responsibilities:

Identifying stories that would make compelling episodes of The Daily – including a sense of how they could be structured and produced

Working with team leadership and hosts to set the editorial agenda for the day

Working closely with Times reporters and editors throughout the newsroom to develop story ideas for the show

Participate in choosing stories for the program

Contributing to editorial selection, writing and structure

Helping guide and doing final edits of scripts before interviews

Coaching New York Times reporters and editors without audio experience

Guiding recording sessions with hosts, guests and producers

Editing episodes, both tight turnarounds for daily news (regularly on an evening or night schedule) and longer-term productions

Guiding producers and working with partners across the newsroom – including standards and legal – in the production and recording of episodes

Basic Qualifications:

At least five years experience in audio production.

At least three years of story editing experience.

Good news judgment and editorial judgment

Some fluency in audio editing, ideally using Pro Tools.

Experience in building and editing complex longform audio narratives and structures and solving for problems with story structure & tape

Communicate notes & feedback clearly and compassionately

Experience and comfort in a deadline-driven environment

Understanding of music scoring and sound design techniques and strategies

Ability and commitment to upholding the editorial standards of The Times

Preferred Qualifications:

Fluency in audio editing, ideally using Pro Tools.

At least three years of long form narrative audio story editing experience

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $112,000.00 and $130,000.00.
