The Styles desk is seeking an experienced editor to produce short- and long-form features. Candidates need not be versed in high fashion, but must have enthusiasm for fascinating characters, new talent, subcultures, social media and trends. Ideal applicants will have a passion for parsing the nuances of culture for a mainstream audience, with wit and grace. In this role, you will assign, shape and edit stories in a variety of formats — from profiles to investigations, interviews and essays. You should be creative and eager to experiment with new digital presentations for our journalism. A love of language, timeliness and a sense of urgency are imperative.

Responsibilities:

Assign, first edit and shape several pieces per week

Develop fresh ideas for enterprise stories and large editorial projects that include a wide range of voices and perspectives

Shape coverage, track news trends and ensure the right stories are covered and published on deadline.

Manage staff writers, helping them to develop their beats while contributing to the desk’s goals

Find and cultivate freelance writers whose voices elevate the section

Strategize with visual editors from a story or project’s inception to publication

In consultation with the desk head and deputy, lead and shape packages and new initiatives or series

Basic Qualifications:

10+ years in journalism with experience managing staff writers

Expert story shaping and line editing skills

The ability to stay calm under pressure

A collaborative spirit

Strong attention to deadlines and detail

The ability to work on multi-platform formats

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior work in a newsroom or for a lifestyle publication

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $140,000.00 and $160,000.00.
