Tips Reporter

New Posted 17 August 2023 | New York, NY | The New York Times

The Investigations desk is seeking a resourceful, collaborative and detail-oriented journalist to run The Times’ confidential tip line, known as TipJar.

Since its introduction in 2016, the secure tip line has been the source of sensitive and sometimes explosive information about government, politics, business, technology, culture and more. Many of our tipsters risk their jobs to expose wrongdoing. They rely on The Times to run a professional operation that protects their identity and distributes their information in a timely manner to the appropriate journalists across the newsroom.

Responsibilities

This is a reporting role that requires vetting tips through traditional reporting methods, such as sending emails, making phone calls and conducting open-source research. As time permits, this person might also be asked to contribute to other projects on the Investigations desk.

Basic Qualifications

Strong news judgment and a curiosity about news developments across desks, as tips are often competitive and must be tagged and distributed on deadline.
Exceptional organizational skills and comfort working with multiple forms of technology, as tips arrive on various platforms and must be handled securely and with confidentiality.
Conceptual and analytical thinking, as summaries identifying trends among tips are regularly distributed to editors.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience dealing with sensitive and complex subjects in a timely manner.
Familiarity with research methods, including filing public records requests.

This is a Guild position. Along with a cover letter, please provide three clips or other examples of your journalism. You can attach this in the "My Experience & Resume/CV" area of the application.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $108,872.22 and $125,000.00.
