The senior social-media editor is a talented writer and multimedia strategist who helps enliven the magazine’s presence across social platforms, established and emerging alike. This person must bring excellent writing and editing skills, strong news judgment, a demonstrated talent for developing and producing social-first content, and a deep interest in the stories and issues regularly covered by The New Yorker. The senior editor has a versatile skill set and identifies opportunities to extend The New Yorker’s storytelling through video and other multimedia formats, making programming recommendations across social channels and creating original content for these platforms. This is a Guild position.

The ideal candidate will work from 1-9 P.M. E.T. Candidates may be fully remote (in another time zone, if desired), however we also welcome applicants who are interested in a hybrid remote/office arrangement in New York City.

Responsibilities:

Help lead and execute The New Yorker’s editorial and creative strategy across platforms, including Facebook, X (the platform formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, Apple News, push notifications, and more.

Write, edit, and post content from the magazine, Web site, events, and brand extensions across social platforms.

Help lead and commission the production of social-first material, including series and franchises, Instagram Stories, Reels, and TikToks, that will elevate the brand on social media and help The New Yorker reach new audiences.

Produce multimedia content, to be published across social-media platforms.

Work collaboratively with the art, photo, and video teams on the design and promotion of social assets for all New Yorker stories.

Collaborate with editors and writers to translate complex stories into visual elements, with an aim to drive readers from social media to our Web site and app.

Help create and coördinate social-media assets for interactive articles and other special projects, including the New Yorker Festival.

Collaborate with the audience development and data analytics teams to maximize stories’ reach and insure the brand is meeting site-wide growth goals.

Insure that The New Yorker is an early innovator on emerging platforms and abreast of the latest social-media trends.

Identify opportunities to leverage The New Yorker’s robust archive.

Skills and Qualifications:

Six to eight years’ experience in a social-media or journalism role.

A portfolio of relevant work.

Excellent writing and editing skills and a demonstrated ability to produce engaging social copy across a range of topics, and for a variety of audiences.

Ability to effectively translate journalism into a visual medium for a general audience.

Experience building an audience on TikTok and Reels.

Demonstrated knowledge of video-editing best practices and experience with graphics and editing software, including Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere, in particular).

Adept at using various video equipment (DSLR, phone, or otherwise) and a demonstrated knowledge of video-capture best practices (e.g. lighting, stabilization, tracking) and audio capture.

Experience establishing and implementing visual style guides.

Motion graphics and/or illustration experience a plus.

Extensive knowledge of, passion for, and experience with social-media platforms, both established and emerging.

The ability to lead multiple projects at once and work in a fast-paced environment.

Strong familiarity with analytics and listening tools such as SocialFlow, Google Analytics, and Parse.ly, and a demonstrated ability to apply performance insights to strategic decisions.

A deep understanding of the media landscape and a strong news sense.

A knowledge of and interest in the history, style, and voice of The New Yorker.

Meticulous attention to detail and strong communication skills.

Ambitious, proactive, and a quick learner.

Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $70,000 - $110,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
