North Carolina Public Safety & Justice Reporter

The News & Observer, based in Raleigh, NC, seeks an energetic, enterprising Public Safety and Justice Reporter to join its award-winning newsroom in the Triangle, one of America’s most diverse and fast-growing communities. Across the country, communities are grappling with issues around public safety and justice. The News & Observer remains in a unique position to tell the ongoing story of public safety and criminal justice policy across North Carolina and the Triangle. The N&O has won three Pulitzer Prizes. The News & Observer’s award-winning report, “Sound of Judgment,” is an example of revelatory enterprise that focuses on criminal justice. This is an ideal role for an experienced reporter who wants to go beyond day-to-day reporting on crime and trials and take a deep look at the institutions, personalities and politics that drive criminal justice conversations in communities across North Carolina and the South. The successful candidate will look at systemic issues with a data-driven approach and an eye toward providing solutions to the issues at hand, notably by telling stories of those impacted by the justice system.
