The Oregonian/OregonLive is seeking an investigative reporter with a track record of delivering ambitious, high-impact watchdog journalism. We’re looking for someone who wants to dive critically into Oregon’s most pressing problems, conceiving and producing a mix of short- and long-term investigative stories that hold the powerful accountable and result in meaningful change, especially for marginalized people and communities.
What you’ll have the opportunity to do:
Identify and quantify emerging problems, or tackle long-standing failures in Oregon through fresh reporting that breaks new ground and finds solutions.
Search out systemic racism and the way bias based on religion, gender, sexual orientation, class or disability affects Oregonians.
Find victims, tell their stories, and leverage your journalism to improve the status quo for Oregonians who are being overlooked or harmed.
Investigative topics and coverage areas will largely be decided by your strengths, interests and expertise, and you’ll have a voice shaping this role. The position provides opportunities for partnerships across the newsroom, not only with other reporting teams but also data, photo and video journalists. Expect a hands-on, collaborative editing environment that begins with story selection and continues through publication.
Proven experience delivering accountability reporting is a must, as we’re looking for a reporter with the hunger and skills to deliver immediately. The ideal candidate will have at least two years’ experience as an investigative or enterprise reporter, or as a reporter covering a high-profile beat yielding numerous watchdog stories, although many different technical skills and reporting paths could fit.
We encourage reporters with diverse experiences and backgrounds to apply. A candidate who can speak Spanish or another world language spoken widely in Oregon (such as Mandarin, Vietnamese or Russian) fluently enough to do interviews would be considered a tremendous asset.
