The Philadelphia Inquirer, winner of 20 Pulitzer Prizes and home to an innovative newsroom, is looking for a talented copy editor and designer with great news judgment and a keen eye for detail who can create print pages and digital articles that demand to be read. The print coordinator works with partners across the newsroom to select and curate content for The Inquirer print section while also working with Inquirer.com While coordinators are likely to have areas of expertise, assignments would be flexible, based on the needs of the team and on the goal of expanding the ability of team members to handle various assignments for both papers and our website.
What You’ll Do:
Determine what stories are available for print based on discussions with editors and online and print budgets
Make sound news decisions and judgments, reflected in the selection and placement of stories, photos, and graphics
Lay out compelling print sections and create digital presentations, maximizing use of white space, headlines, and visual elements
Copy edit stories, post them to Inquirer.com, and write headlines and photo captions for print
Interact with reporters and other editors during the editing process
Place a premium on ensuring Inquirer content is fair, accurate, and thorough
Meet all production deadlines on a consistent basis
Who We’re Looking For:
Proficient in digital and print content management tools. We use Arc and Roxen.
Strong news judgment, communication, and collaboration skills
Experience in both digital and print journalism, with an understanding of what content works across platforms
Fundamental editing, coaching, and collaborative skills
Skills in brainstorming, planning, and coordinating multimedia storytelling
Familiarity with social media (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram)
Basic skills in analytics (Chartbeat)
Knowledge in building a digital story with links, tags, SEO and posting directly to the website
Basic knowledge of what works in multimedia storytelling and editing for the web
Basic graphics building and numeracy skills
Basic Excel skills
Basic audio and video skills
Skills in headline writing for digital audience
