Beaufort County News Reporter

New Posted 5 February 2024 | Charleston, SC | The Post and Courier

The Post and Courier, South Carolina’s oldest daily newspaper and premier news source, is seeking an aggressive reporter to join our team covering Beaufort County – a historic sea island location in the Lowcountry that is made up primarily of Hilton Head Island and Bluffton as well as the county seat of Beaufort and its environs.

This reporter will develop sources and keep tabs on county and municipal government, schools and breaking news in order to tell the best stories and provide readers the best information on what is happening. The emphasis will be on growing our audience in a fast-growing coastal area with a top tourism destination, a strong military presence and ever-increasing demand for growth.

This beat goes beyond traditional meeting coverage and press releases. This reporter will work closely with an experienced team of journalists to stay on top of the day’s most-pressing stories — and there is never a shortage of stories on this beat, from growth and development, live events, hurricanes and tropical storms, a thriving Gullah-Geechee community and more.

In a market with a number of other news outlets, there is a need for deeper coverage that stands out from the pack. We are seeking an innovative journalist whose stories will delve into the lives of those affected by change, policy decisions and headlines of the day.

Along with reporting daily stories and enterprise pieces, this journalist will also seek to tell stories in other ways, including photos and video – particularly short-form, vertical video. As readers increasingly consume video for news and information, our reporters aim to expand our digital presence with mobile-first storytelling.

This position reports to a local editor and the Managing Editor in Charleston, who helps oversee Lowcountry coverage. To be successful, the reporter will need the background and skills to cultivate sources and lead news coverage in a competitive market.

If you are hired, you will join an ambitious, Pulitzer Prize-winning culture where talented journalists have the opportunity to pursue the best work of their careers, limited only by their ambition and determination.

The Post and Courier is privately held and is investing in its journalism. We began expanding across South Carolina in 2020, seeking to fill a void in news deserts or areas where local news coverage had withered. We now operate Post and Courier newsrooms in multiple cities, including Charleston, Columbia, Greenville/Spartanburg, Florence and Myrtle Beach in addition to Beaufort County.

We are a passionate, dedicated, digital-driven news organization and seek someone who shares that journalistic passion and commitment to excellence.
