Metro Reporter

The Post and Courier, South Carolina’s oldest daily newspaper and premier news source, is seeking an aggressive reporter to cover Berkeley County and perform general assignment duties. This reporter will develop sources and keep tabs on county and municipal government, schools and breaking news.

The emphasis for this role will be on expanding our audience in one of the fastest-growing areas in the Charleston region as well as the nation.

This beat goes beyond traditional meeting coverage and press releases. This reporter will work closely with an experienced team of journalists to stay on top of the day’s most-pressing stories — and there is never a shortage of stories on this beat, from growth and development, live events, school board contention, a burgeoning Brazilian community and more. The position will serve one shift a week, at least, on the Quick Response team covering breaking news and top happenings in Charleston and the tri-county region.

In a market with several television stations and a number of other news outlets, there is a need for deeper coverage that stands out from the pack. We are seeking an innovative journalist whose stories will delve into the lives of those affected by change, policy decisions and headlines of the day.

Along with reporting daily stories and enterprise pieces, this journalist will also seek to tell stories in other ways, including short-form, vertical video. As readers increasingly consume video for news and information, our reporters aim to expand our digital presence with mobile-first storytelling.

This position reports to a local Metro editor who oversees coverage in Charleston and across the tri-county area. To be successful, the reporter will need the background and skills to not only stay on top of developing news but also cultivate sources that allow the reporter to break news, spot trends and find the unique and unusual in a competitive market.

The Post and Courier is privately held and is investing in its journalism. We began expanding across South Carolina in 2020, seeking to fill a void in news deserts or areas where local news coverage had withered. In addition to the Charleston market, we now operate Post and Courier newsrooms in multiple cities, including Columbia, Greenville/Spartanburg, Beaufort County/Hilton Head, Florence and Myrtle Beach.

Responsibilities:

Provide primary news coverage from Berkeley County, a fast-growing area in the Charleston, SC, tri-county region.
Use a data-driven approach to providing content that grows our audience.
Plan and conceptualize enterprise story ideas while collaborating with other journalists.
Embrace a spirit of nimble experimentation to test nontraditional story formats.

Qualifications

At minimum, a bachelor’s degree in journalism or another field of study if you have journalism experience. Ideally, candidate will have at least 2 years of reporting experience.
Writing and editing skills.
Excellent news judgment.
A background that demonstrates dedication to high-impact journalism.
Video editing and production skills.
Working knowledge of SEO.
