The Press Democrat, the largest news organization between San Francisco and Portland, has an immediate opening for a government/community issues reporter covering two key Northern California cities: Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park. We’re the flagship newsroom of Sonoma Media Investments, a privately held Northern California-based media company owned by local investors. That means we have no debt, no Wall Street obligations and no obstacles to high-powered, meaningful journalism. We’re a proud news organization of several publications and digital sites filled. We offer hands-on coaching, seasoned editors, talented co-workers and the opportunity to immediately contribute in a significant way. We have a tradition of pursuing and publishing ambitious, award-winning journalism (including a 2018 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news) in Santa Rosa, a newsy and beautiful corner of California 75 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the heart of Sonoma County’s Wine Country. We are seeking a smart, curious and resourceful reporter who can balance news and enterprise coverage in two of Sonoma County’s most high-profile cities: The county seat of Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park, our third-largest and a fast-growing city just south of Santa Rosa. Both offer a wide range of story topics and issues – from growth and development to matters of diversity and equity, as well as public safety, the environment, public health and watchdog accountability.
We are a fast-paced newsroom that invests in training and professional development. You should be a self-starter who understands social media and how to engage readers about patterns and trends in the communities you cover. Comfortable taking photos and videos? That’s a plus. So, too, is data acquisition and fluency in Spanish.
