Visual Journalist

The Sacramento Bee is looking for a visual journalist to join us in building a major component of our newsroom’s future. This is an editorial position focused on shooting, editing and producing original visual content – photos and video – across multiple platforms.

Visual journalists play a critical role working closely with newsroom colleagues to tell the most important and timely stories. This individual will be required to pitch, report and produce daily and long-term visual stories with photography and video. A strong work ethic, the ability to multi-task and an aptitude for meeting short- and long-term deadlines are required.

Responsibilities Include

Conceptualize daily visuals that appeal to local and state online audiences
Report, edit and produce compelling video journalism on deadline
Shoot photographs for share images, digital presentations and print
Collaborate with editors and reporters to develop creative approaches to digital storytelling
Write headlines, captions, summaries, social media posts and stories that are engaging and accurate
Drone piloting (we can train and license)

What You'll Bring

Skills Needed: Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and team player skills are required. Leadership skills, strategic thinking and the ability to work with colleagues are essential. Visual sensibility and experience contributing to interactive and multimedia work, with creative concepts and implementation, are also desired. Strong news judgment and advanced communication skills are needed. An understanding of audience trends and digital media are important as well. So is the ability to quickly edit video. Extensive background in journalism, video and online media preferred. Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

Personal Attributes: Energy, flexibility and online skills are important. This journalist will need to work well with a variety of editors and staff at all levels within a digitally evolving local newsroom. Aptitude for thinking big, working wisely and quickly iterating are required.

Education: College degree required.

Experience: At least 2 years journalism experience preferred. Familiarity with DSLR and mirrorless cameras, capturing sound and video editing. Valid driver’s license.

This position will be based in Sacramento and will report to the Visuals Editor. The position may involve working nights and/or weekends. Some travel may be required.
