The San Francisco Standard (sfstandard.com) is expanding its newsroom, and we're in search of an accomplished Food Editor to join our team. As a full-time member of the staff, you'll oversee a small team of food reporters, photographers and video creators as they dive into the rich—and complicated—culinary landscape of San Francisco.
We are seeking an individual with a profound understanding of the restaurant, drinking and cooking scenes, its trends and tropes, and the diverse personalities influencing the way we eat now. The ideal candidate will possess a discerning palate, a keen eye for captivating narratives, several years of food-editing experience, a proven track record of producing high-level journalism, and an appreciation for the cultural nuances that make the Bay Area a culinary melting pot.
Responsibilities:
Conceive, assign and edit stories at the intersection of culinary arts and culture, diving into the flavors, trends, and personalities that define the Bay Area food scene.
Help writers curate the best of the Bay Area culinary world, unearthing the secrets of the restaurant scene, and introducing the people shaping the industry.
Represent the Standard at foodie-forward events, serving as an event moderator or a public-facing expert in the media.
Assist reporters in developing and maintaining a robust network of contacts within the culinary community.
Collaborate seamlessly with editors, photographers, multimedia experts, and other talented journalists to transform your stories into immersive experiences across various platforms.
Requirements:
A minimum of 5 years of editing experience, especially within the culinary beat.
Possess a deep understanding of the SF food landscape, its hot newcomers, its iconic spots and its experimental new entries.
Exhibit exceptional taste in writing and storytelling, adept at working over copy until it’s perfectly seasoned and ready to serve
Demonstrate a proven ability to cultivate and sustain a network of sources within the culinary community. Bonus points if you know them IRL and not just on LinkedIn.
Showcase proficiency in digital content management systems, social media and a passion for multimedia storytelling.
Thrive in the dynamic environment of a fast-paced newsroom.
Hold a bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism, communications, or a related field.
This is an in-person role based in San Francisco, with occasional evening or weekend commitments. We offer competitive salaries and benefits that align with the culinary richness of your beat.
To apply, submit a comprehensive application package, including your resume, cover letter, and at least five work samples showcasing your gastronomic reporting and editing prowess. Provide insights into the challenges you've conquered, your role in shaping impactful stories, and the tangible influence your journalism has had.
The pay range for this role is $110,000 to $180,000. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t fit all the preferred qualifications of the job.
