We are looking for a Senior Data Journalist to join The Telegraph.
Working across every part of the newsroom, you will use data to uncover exclusive stories, generate insightful analysis and create innovative visuals and interactives. You will work on topics ranging from health to finance to national elections, using your data analysis skills to help correspondents and editors uncover trends and news lines hidden in the data.
You will pitch, research and write your own data pieces, from breaking news stories to features. Your experience in data-driven journalism will mean you can calmly and authoritatively explain complicated statistical concepts and trends to busy reporters and editors, often with very little notice. You will also work with designers to create eye-catching, informative graphics.
The position requires a highly organised, self-starting individual who has both the sharp editorial sense of a seasoned reporter, as well as the deep passion for statistics of a data scientist. You will use your in-depth knowledge of existing datasets and writing skills to pitch and write features and analysis. Using your programming skills, you will clean enormous datasets to be used in lookups, calculators, league tables and other projects.
Most importantly, you will always be thinking of new and exciting ways to present that information, working with our developers and award-winning visual team to come up with news formats befitting of the UK’s News Website of the Year.
As a senior member of the team, you will take a lead on a handful of longer-term projects and work with senior editorial staff to ensure data is at the heart of planning for major diary events. You will use your experience to help train junior members of the team, and help journalists across the newsroom improve statistical literacy.
