The Times-Standard is looking for a staff reporter whose duties will be split between covering local sports and local news. News stories will include coverage of local city council meetings; sports coverage includes Cal Poly Humboldt, College of the Redwoods, Humboldt Crabs and local high school sports primarily. The ideal candidate will have previous professional newspaper or journalism experience and a strong working knowledge of AP style.
What you will do:
Primary responsibility is reporting at least two byline stories per day on sports and news topics
Working cooperatively with our small team or journalists
What you will bring:
Journalism experience, AP style knowledge and the ability to quickly compile accurate reporting on a variety of topics. Spelling and grammar skills required
The candidate should have experience working with various technologies for the position including PC laptops, digital cameras and recording equipment
Good people skills are necessary for conducting interviews with sources
Bachelor's degree preferred; experience in a professional journalism newsroom preferred
Travel/Work Environment:
Some required as we cover a 4,000-square-mile area
Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, most work is done remotely although there is access to our office and the nearly 170 years of our newspaper archive
Driving to cover stories is occasionally required
