Graphics/Multimedia Editor

New Posted 4 September 2023 | New York, NY | The Upshot

The Upshot is looking for a graphics editor with strong engineering skills to build interactive features that help readers learn about the world in fun, accessible and engaging ways, and expose them to topics they might not otherwise see. You might call it “smart fun.” We’re interested in exploring new types of quizzes, news games and interactivity that readers will look forward to each day or each week.

You will be a part of small, motivated and autonomous teams, with a high level of independence and responsibility. We move at the pace of our creativity and judgment, while tapping into The Times’s expertise and infrastructure.

Projects will draw upon The Times’s articles, photography, data and archives, and its portfolio of existing games and interactive features. So far, we’ve worked on projects like WordleBot and Spelling Bee Buddy. The goal is for all of this work to resonate with The Times’s audience of curious readers.

This graphics editor may also work on enterprise and analytical stories with other members of The Upshot.

Alongside technical judgment in building complex systems, you will develop and exercise visual and journalistic judgment to ensure the clarity and accuracy of our work.

You have the following:

Basic Qualifications:

3-5 years of experience in this field, but we welcome all qualified applicants to apply

Expertise in front-end Web development, including JavaScript, HTML and CSS

Expertise in one or more backend languages, such as Node, Python or Ruby

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to work collaboratively with people of different skills and backgrounds

Ability to meet deadlines, and to adapt and find pragmatic solutions when faced with time or technical constraints

Technical creativity, curiosity and versatility

Interest in creating news games, puzzles and interactive experiences

Interest in visual skills, including typography, layout, color, motion and user behavior

Interest in user experience, including lightweight user research, feedback and testing

The annual base pay range for this role is between $109,521.19 and $136,000.00.
