The Wall Street Journal is seeking a news photo editor for its New York or San Francisco office.
The Wall Street Journal is looking for a photo editor with great range, editorial judgment and journalistic integrity; an editor who is able to produce complex photo assignments, perform strong agency and social media research, think conceptually and work quickly and effectively within a large newsroom setting. The Photo Editor will be responsible for photographic coverage, primarily focused on business news which covers a wide range of subject matter including technology, media, aviation, agriculture, retail, automotives, energy, and small business. The position will report to the Deputy Director of Photography, Business and is open to qualified candidates based in either San Francisco or New York.
You will:
Work quickly and accurately on breaking news and enterprise business stories, collaborating with the newsroom’s editors, visual teams and section chiefs.
Curate and produce visually-led stories in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic and other needs as stories develop. Work in our CMS to combine different formats, newsroom tools and visual elements.
Commission photography, working with our freelance photographers, editors and reporters to tell narrative, investigative, breaking news and enterprise stories on all platforms including mobile and print.
Follow department guidelines and safety protocols in working with photographers and subjects.
Promote a diverse and exciting group of photographers and subjects, with an eye to building new audiences for our journalism.
Pitch visually innovative and original projects and approaches to digital story production, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.
Work with platform and off-platform editors to surface the work strategically across all platforms.
Manage budget effectively with quarterly check-ins with supervisors.
Coordinate closely with the business photo editors and broader team of photo editors, communicating the daily content and any staffing coverage needs.
Work autonomously, with clear communication skills and an ability to collaborate both in an in-person office environment as well as with remote team members.
Have the ability to think conceptually about a story, and execute photo-illustrations with the help of an illustrator.
You have:
At least 3 years experience in a photo editing role, an enthusiasm for good journalism and current events, and keen news judgment.
Proven deep research skills and experience with news gathering and research tools.
Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools.
Some knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript a plus.
Motivation to work independently as well as with a team.
Strong organizational and communication skills and an ability to balance short and long term projects across different sections.
The initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.

Pay Range: $50,000 - $180,000
