The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Photo Editor for WSJ. Magazine & its Style coverage area in New York. WSJ. Magazine and Style blend deep reporting, intelligent wit and good taste to create compulsively readable spot stories, analysis and features on the subjects of style, entertainment, celebrity, society, lifestyle and the arts — with a fast-paced, robustly reported execution.
We are looking for a photo editor with both a stylish sensibility and journalistic integrity who brings a background in style news or cultural features assigning and production. You must also have a digital, deadline-driven background and be able to work quickly and accurately on a range of subjects, collaborating with the Style News editors and reporters as well as non-staff writers and contributors. You should have experience with contemporary portraiture, reportage, conceptual still-life and have deep, expedient research skills.
You will:
Produce, pull and build visual assets for Style News content — doing photo research, commissioning portraits, reportage, or photo illustration — for the needs of all digital platforms.
Always hit deadlines, balancing fast-paced spot deadlines with longer-lead feature and enterprise stories.
Pitch visually innovative and original approaches to coverage, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.
Think in fresh, catchy and witty ways about how to best visually represent columns and analysis, with an eye to social engagement.
Work closely with WSJ. Magazine photo editors, WSJ newsroom photo editors, and our platform teams.
Meticulously maintain a budget on a monthly basis. Professionally represent Journal interests and negotiate rates with relevant contractors and third-parties.
You have:
At least 3 to 5 years experience in a photo-editing role.
A background in editorial production work, conceptualization and assigning of visual content.
Excellent news judgment, fast digital editing skills and an expansive understanding of mobile-first experience and design.
Deep research skills, including newsgathering and social media tools.
Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities.
A creative vision and enthusiasm to spearhead and collaborate on new ideas.
The drive to reach new audiences, an understanding of and appreciation for audience data and SEO-friendly presentation.
Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and all social media platforms.
The ability to be a self-starter who works well with larger teams.
