The Wall Street Journal

Reporter, Commercial Real Estate
The Wall Street Journal is looking for a reporter to cover the rapidly changing world of retail real estate and other sectors of the commercial property industry. You will cover shopping malls, department stores, and other brick and mortar retailers at a time when their business model is coming under great stress and industry leaders have to find new ways to engage consumers with their physical stores. In this reporting role, you will cover sector giants like mall owner Simon Property Group but also mom and pop shop owners and budding retailers experimenting with new corporate strategies through real estate. It is an exciting time to be covering commercial real estate as the pandemic and the rise in remote work have upended nearly every aspect of this business, from hotels to office towers. All grist for great stories. The ideal candidate will have a history of dominating a competitive beat, breaking news and writing authoritative features. You should also be a passionate storyteller, be fascinated by the evolving retail world and have a feel for telling real estate stories in a way that resonates with the shopping public. While you may start remotely, you will be based in New York and report to the Real Estate Bureau Chief. To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and five work samples.
