The Wall Street Journal internship program is an opportunity primarily for college juniors to work in our award-winning investigations team in New York. Seniors and graduate students enrolled in a degree program by the application deadline are also eligible to apply.
You will contribute reporting and data analysis to enterprise projects and daily coverage. Working with reporters around the world, you will be immersed in data-driven stories and gain hands-on experience analyzing millions (or billions) of rows of data using tools like Excel, SQL, Python and R.
Applicants should be excited at the prospect of battling FOIA officers, scraping poorly formed websites and learning to write computer code that ferrets out fraud.
You should have experience analyzing and visualizing data with Excel, SQL, R, Python or similar tools, and also have an understanding of scripting with Python or other languages to scrape and mold unstructured data from websites.
You should be a self-starter who understands the needs of our audience across multiple platforms and is able to work independently under deadline pressure. Dedication to high journalistic standards and excellent writing and reporting skills are required. A demonstrated interest in business reporting is a plus, though prior business/finance reporting experience is not required.
You should have completed at least one prior reporting internship with another professional media organization or published exceptional work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.
