The Washington Post is seeking a creative, versatile and experienced reporter to cover the business of medicine. This reporter will be focused on pharmaceutical firms, health-technology companies and medical device makers and will explore how they are shaping the next generation of treatments, exerting influence in Washington and making their mark on American consumers. We expect this reporter to find regular opportunities to engage the news of the day — from the legal battle over abortion pills to high-profile debates about drug approvals and pricing — while keeping a close watch on how innovation is reshaping medicine outside the purview of policymakers. The successful candidate will have a track record of seizing opportunities to break news and cover developments as they arise, while also identifying trends in the industry and holding companies accountable for their actions, which directly affect so many lives. We want someone who can build a broad stable of sources, choose consequential reporting targets and write about them with urgency, clarity and authority – always keeping in mind the need to make this far-flung and complex beat accessible to a general audience. A collegial spirit is a must: In addition to working closely with another health industry reporter on the Business desk, this reporter will collaborate regularly with The Post’s Health and Science team. This position can either be based in our Washington newsroom or in our San Francisco bureau.
