The Washington Post is looking for an experienced reporter to deliver agenda-setting news and insight into the highest levels of decision-making authority at the Pentagon. We seek someone who has a track record of reporting consequential scoops and enterprise on defense from within the halls of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, in the combatant commands, and across the agencies and institutions that intersect with the Department of Defense. A deep understanding of the conflicts — past, present and future — that the military is waging or for which it is planning is a plus, as is experience covering U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, Iraq or Ukraine. A top candidate will bring to bear a robust source network within the Pentagon and skill navigating the bureaucracy of the E Ring — along with a willingness to travel, an ability to distill sophisticated and arcane military-speak for an educated general audience, and a lively writing style. The reporter will be expected to move quickly — and be first — to break news, while juggling sharply framed analysis and feature-length enterprise.
