About you
Based in our Kalgoorlie office and reporting to the Editor of the Kalgoorlie Miner, the opportunity is open for a graduate journalist to join our dynamic team. The role will have you covering a range of news in a region rich in potential for breaking and telling important yarns and honing your craft on the Kalgoorlie Miner, which publishes Monday to Saturday each week.
The successful candidate is someone with the below qualities:
The ability to work under high pressure and be flexible with work hours;
Strong interviewing and communication skills;
A sense of urgency and focus on deadlines;
A passion for local news (with an interest in government-focused news desirable);
Existing skills or a strong desire to upskill with digital production and social media promotion; and
A valid driver’s licence.
About the Role
Essential to the role are strong writing and communication skills, a nose for sniffing out news, and a talent for hard work and team work. The successful applicant must be highly motivated and bring a positive attitude to the team. You will be required to cover a wide range of rounds, from hard news to community-driven stories, possibly even sport. You must be confident in taking photographs and filing news for our online platforms.
The ideal candidate will have tertiary qualifications in journalism or a similar field and will partake in tasks such as:
• Gathering and writing original news stories for publication in print and online platforms;
• Developing positive relationships with key people and organisations;
• Breaking news stories and creating engaging content;
• Contributing to news planning meetings and liaising with the Editor regarding story development;
• Interviewing and photographing subjects confidently and professionally; and
• Representing the Company in a professional and courteous manner.
