TIME is seeking a weekend editor to join its London bureau. We are looking for a versatile journalist who is curious, driven, and excited to be part of a dynamic, global, 24/7 news operation that coordinates between editorial staff around the world. The successful candidate will have experience reporting and editing under deadline pressure, enjoy generating ideas in a fast-paced environment, and interest in coverage on a range of topics, from American and global politics to business and technology.
The ideal candidate should be able to juggle overlapping deadlines, assign smart news stories, and jump in to write in times of major breaking news. They should enjoy refining stories with an eye for clean copy, sharp angles, strong headlines, and compelling reporting. The editor will supervise a reporter in London working the same shift.
The position is a six-month fixed-term contract, paid on a day rate, with the possibility of extension. It would begin with two days per week (Saturday and Sunday), with regular hours from 11am-7pm.
Responsibilities
Assign and edit quicker-turn pieces, explainers, and reported second clicks on news and trends; supporting a junior reporter in identifying key sources to contact and summarizing main themes quickly and accurately
Publish wire stories on the top news of the day, building stories in TIME’s CMS with compelling headlines and strong visuals
Send the weekend editions of the Brief newsletter
Update the TIME.com homepage
Manage TIME’s weekend social presence, posting new stories to Twitter and Facebook
Send Apple alerts
During major news events, work with editors and reporters across the newsroom to publish clean and well-reported stories
Qualifications
At least three years working as a reporter and/or editor, preferably for international or U.S. outlets
The ability to collaborate across bureaus and time zones, often under intense deadline pressure
Experience working on a breaking news desk and/or experience editing news stories
An understanding of U.S. news and politics'
An eye for a good headline and an understanding of SEO
Meticulous attention to detail
The ability to operate independently while maintaining high journalistic standards
