Does your heart skip a beat when your inbox includes the subject line “Response to FOIL request”? Do you believe that journalism is one of the best tools for holding the powerful to account? And have you always wanted to cover a statehouse known across one of the nation’s most dramatic — and not always in a good way? If so, the Times Union is seeking an investigative reporter to join our award-winning and nationally acclaimed Capitol Bureau. The reporter will work with our bureau chief and managing editor for investigations to craft a mix of deep dives and quicker stories on New York state government, politics and beyond. The successful candidate will be adept at extracting gold from public documents — from campaign filings to court records — and will be able to develop a network of sources to stay one step ahead of a competitive statehouse press corps. We’re looking for stories that impact the lives of readers across New York, not insider baseball.
