The USA TODAY NETWORK is seeking a network reporter to write about issues of interest to readers who are approaching or at retirement age.
The successful candidate will report about topics that are useful, interesting and help this audience to navigate their busy lives. We’re looking for someone with a passion for covering such topics as fitness, food, home prices, retirement planning, taxes, home improvement, wealth management, Social Security, health care management, entertainment, local dining, local entertainment, advice and culture.
This reporter will craft tight, informative reads that answer the audience’s most pressing questions. The ideal candidate has a willingness to experiment with formats, and can use content to provide a bridge for print readers who are interested in learning about or using digital products.
This beat also takes aim at serious issues, including the environment, voting/democracy, inflation/economy, and issues of importance in Middle America.
Applicants must possess strong writing, social media, SEO expertise and the energy to produce several pieces of content each week. We're looking for someone who can come up with thoughtful feature pitches but can also react quickly to the news.
This position can be remote for the right candidate and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.
Responsibilities:
Pitch stories on a continuous basis and discern what will resonate with readers.
Write and report several high-quality features and quick-turn stories per week.
Develop a deep and diverse well of sources to inform stories on a broad array of topics.
Work with editors to evaluate what's working and what's not and develop ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
Collaborate with content team to provide all appropriate elements for stories (i.e., photos, videos, and graphics).
Requirements:
Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least three years of journalism experience.
Demonstrated expertise with social media and must be comfortable using these platforms to find sources and promote content.
A thorough understanding of metrics and how to use these to inform coverage decisions.
Must enjoy collaborating and working with teammates.
Knowledge of AP Style.
Know how to turn readers into subscribers by telling relevant, shareable stories.

The hourly rate for this role will range between $20.20 and $28.85. Variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable.
