South Jersey Impact Reporter

New Posted 12 October 2023 | Cherry Hill, NJ | USA TODAY

We believe in the power of local journalism and are looking for a journalist that’s comfortable with and ready to tell stories ranging from businesses opening and closing, to the role youth sports play in our neighborhoods, to corruption and transparency issues in local government to service journalism pieces that guide our readers through their community.

You’ll maintain a calendar of content ready for short-term, mid-term and long-term delivery and be flexible enough to chip in on breaking news, collaborate on enterprise and capitalize on trending topics.

We’re not calling this a general assignment beat, because that phrase doesn’t sync with how we identify, develop and deliver news anymore. You won’t be looking for ANY story; you’ll be strategic in selecting stories – and storytelling formats – that prioritize the audience’s interest and gives it to them in the form they want.

If you have experience with this kind of reporting or the dedication and discipline to learn, please read on.

As the South Jersey Impact Reporter, you will be responsible for:

Storytelling: Finding and delivering content that highlights how people live their lives in our communities. This includes uncovering the challenges they face, providing the information they need for everyday life, and explaining how broader regional stories impact them.

News Judgment:Exercising sound news judgment to identify the most important and relevant stories for our readers. You will be expected to deliver smart, efficient storytelling multiple times per day while also balancing a calendar of regular informative enterprise reporting.

Flexibility: Being comfortable with flexibility to respond quickly to breaking news or trending topics in the community. Your ability to adapt to evolving situations will be crucial.

Ethics and Journalism Principles: Upholding impeccable ethics and sound journalistic principles in every aspect of your reporting. We take pride in our commitment to accuracy, fairness, and accountability.

Social Media and Alternative Storytelling: Using social media effectively to engage with our audience and promote your stories. Additionally, having skills in alternative storytelling formats such as video, podcasts, and interactive graphics is highly desirable.

Application Instructions:

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

Your updated current resume – one to two pages.
A cover letter explaining your interest and fit for the position.
Your portfolio/clips/links to a few samples of your work.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
