A general assignment reporter will cover a wide range of news topics for Vallejo and Solano County Community. The primary responsibility is to gather information, conduct interviews, and write news stories on various subjects.
What you will do:
Conduct research on assigned topics, gather information from various sources, and verify the authenticity of the information obtained.
Involve in-person interviews, phone calls, or email correspondence
Write clear, accurate, and engaging news stories for publication ensuring that the stories are well-structured, coherent, and adhere to the organization's editorial standards and guidelines
Meet tight deadlines and deliver news stories on time; two byline stories per day Work efficiently under pressure, especially in the case of breaking news situations
Cover specific beats or areas of interest, such as politics, crime, education, health, or entertainment
Build relationships within the community to identify important issues and stories Attend public events and meetings to stay informed about local developments
Collaborate with other reporters, editors, and colleagues in the newsroom
Be adaptable and open to learning new skills and tools
What you will bring:
Journalism experience, AP style knowledge and the ability to quickly compile accurate reporting on a variety of topics
Strong writing and communication skills; spelling and grammar skills required
Experience working with various technologies for the position including PC laptops, digital cameras and recording equipment
Good people skills are necessary for conducting interviews with sources
Bachelor's degree preferred; experience in a professional journalism newsroom preferred
Excellent research and investigative abilities
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Multimedia skills, including photo and video editing, are often preferred
Previous experience in reporting or internships with media organizations is a plus
