Editor in Chief
The Ventura County Star/, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a full-time news director and dynamic leader to oversee the newsroom in Camarillo, Calif. The news director, the top editor in the newsroom, is responsible for leading a team of reporters and photographers in providing high-quality journalism using data and analysis to zero in on the topics and issues most important to key audiences.

The editor will coach reporters to make strategic decisions about coverage and direct and champion investigative and watchdog journalism. The successful candidate will be comfortable being the public face of the Ventura County Star and work to increase the visibility of the news organization in the city, county and state. This newsroom also provides news to the USA TODAY NETWORK and collaborates closely with other Gannett newsrooms across California.

This editor works collaboratively on content initiatives and monitors online traffic to ensure staff members are putting their efforts into content that will be the most relevant and useful for our readers. The successful candidate will collaborate with the digital production team and design studio daily, plan content across products and platforms and set the editorial tone. This editor will spearhead grant proposals and fundraising initiatives to grow the Star’s newsroom, conduct outreach in the community, and advocate for transparency with local government agencies.
