VTDigger is looking for a deputy managing editor to help lead Vermont’s largest newsroom. You will work collaboratively with the editor-in-chief, managing editor and senior editors to ensure that the nonprofit news organization is delivering on its mission of producing rigorous journalism that explains complex issues, promotes public accountability and fosters democratic and civic engagement. Your primary responsibility will be to support the managing editor in running day-to-day operations in the newsroom. This includes planning the daily report, assigning stories, coordinating the editing process and overseeing production. It involves guiding the newsroom through breaking-news situations, as well as supporting time-intensive investigations and series. You’ll oversee visuals and multimedia and serve as the newsroom’s liaison to VTDigger’s tech, product and design staff. You’ll also lead the newsroom’s public engagement efforts and collaborate with the commentary editor to create an inclusive, respectful and fact-based forum for differing views. You will report directly to the managing editor and manage several key staff members, including the news editor, digital editor and photographer. You’ll support the editor-in-chief and managing editor in addressing personnel matters, as well as hiring and onboarding new staff. For the past two years, VTDigger has engaged in an intensive effort to become a more diverse, equitable and inclusive organization. We seek to include the voices of all Vermonters — particularly those from underrepresented and historically marginalized communities — in our coverage and in our newsroom. As deputy managing editor, you’ll play a leading role in ensuring that we deliver on those goals.
