JOB OVERVIEW
The Show Editor/Editor has a leading dual role on the show. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Editor will be responsible for the overall shape and sound of the show – writing the critical words that open the broadcast and keep the listener hooked through the hour. The ideal candidate writes so that their words lift off the page, in a voice that is both natural and essential at the same time. They write precisely and clearly, as quickly as the news breaks and with compassion and humor to set the right tone for the show. The Editor will play a key role on The World’s daily production team; working alongside the Show Producer, they help conceive and shepherd the broadcast from editorial meeting to live on-air. They are responsible for “the voice” of the show, editing or writing all the host copy and more, paying close attention to the flow between stories and the continuity of the broadcast. Additionally, the Editor will manage and oversee the work of producers or reporters.
As an Editor, they will commission and edit stories from reporters and producers, and craft content in creative and distinct ways that help The World stand out on public radio. They are a creative and editorial mentor to producers and reporters, guiding their storytelling to be more ambitious. The Editor helps plan for news events and spots trends and themes.
The ideal candidate has a deep knowledge of international news and demonstrates an innate curiosity about events and people that drive the news in all regions of the globe. Their command of world news positions the broadcast to tell stories that distinguish The World from other news outlets. They must know radio production inside and out – and be able to provide guidance on conducting interviews and the creative use of audio. They will help plan for news events, and spot trends, and themes. The Editor knows how to meet deadlines and how to enforce them.
