WIRED Ideas pieces—often written by some of the leading experts in their fields— range from ambitious proposals for using technology to improve the world to clear-eyed warnings about the dangers of a new trend. As staff editor, you’ll work with the Senior Ideas Editor to scout for talented thinkers and writers, help them shape their thoughts, and edit their work. You’ll work on quick analysis of major news events, as well as far-sighted evergreen essays. You’ll be expected to generate story ideas that advance conversation on important topics and match them effectively with talented writers. To do well in this job you’ll need to be someone who values diversity of background and opinion and is excited by the challenge of finding undiscovered talent all around the world. You’ll have a keen eye for compelling arguments and fresh ideas, coupled with a good nose for hype and muddled thinking. You’ll need to be both a talented wordsmith and a strong structural editor. And you’ll need to manage a rhythm of output that ensures these essays are frequently part of the mix of stories on Wired.com.
