Our blog, Yarrow Global, celebrates, explains and explores the intersection of gender equality, health, and the environment around the world. We publish articles on the intersection of gender, health, and the environment, especially those dealing with topics such as planetary health, climate change, reproductive rights and justice, decolonizing health systems, and care work.
We are excited to hear from new writers and voices and welcome pitches dealing with gender, health, and/or the environment from around the world. Please read our blog before pitching me to get a sense of our style and to make sure we haven’t already written about the subject. Here are also some guidelines to help get your pitch accepted.
A good pitch will always include the following:
A brief (1-3 sentence) intro to yourself, where you are based, and a few links to previous articles or blogs.
Warm greetings to you. Thank you for taking the time to review what I have written and proposed here. My name is Mark Van Loan and I am 59 years old and I live in Western, Maine. I have had a career in technology but I am now a certified Reiki and Access Consciousness Bars Practitioner and aspiring author. I always thought I was a feminist but have come to understand that is the opinion of a privileged white male raised in a highly patriarchal society. I am only now beginning to understand the extent of conditioning and socialising that I experienced in my life. I write about the environment, health and mental health issues and alternative & holistic services. My articles are typically aimed at men and include advice or insight on how to deal with issues in all the realms of our lives (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual).
The type of article you are pitching and a proposed title: I am proposing a series of 3 articles titled Acceptance, Forgiveness and Gratitude. I believe working in these three areas offer opportunities to heal and I believe I can weave a narrative that will be compelling.
A 1-2 paragraph description of the article It should tell me what the article will be about, what kind of sources you plan on using (interviews, peer-reviewed articles, reports, etc.), and what it will add for our readers.
Please do not pitch me the following:
Fiction, poetry, photo essays, art reviews, short stories, etc.
Pitches that don’t include a sentence or two about you
Pitches that don’t have a gender angle and a connection to at least either health or
the environment
Overly general topics (please don’t tell me “I want to write about climate change and women" or “I want to write about maternal mortality”)
ChatGPT or AI submissions I will flag and block your email
Our articles fall into one of five categories:
General articles. These fall between 1000-2500 words and generally explore or examine a topic at the intersection of gender, health, and the environment. They make a general argument and use evidence, quotes, and interviews from experts to back up those claims.
Q&A’s: These are based around an interview with an expert and can range between 1500-3000 words. They usually include a 300-500 word introduction to the topic and the expert, followed by an edited version of the interview.
Opinion pieces: We are interested in publishing opinion pieces from experts in the field (we define this broadly - extensive lived experience counts as well as having a PhD or research experience). Most opinion pieces comment on current events or have a news hook.
Profiles: We are always interested in profiling people who have worked on gender. Maybe they have faced a specific field. A current book that has made an impression or changed how we think or talk about gender, health, or the environment is something we are interested in hearing about. A good book review will both give us a summary of the most relevant parts of the book and help our readers understand why and in what context it is relevant to discussions today.
Rates
Our rates depend based on type and length of article, from ~$100 for a Q&A or profile to $200-$300 for a reported article, depending on length.
