The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants’ (NYSSCPA) Excellence in Financial Journalism Awards celebrates the year's best-distinguished reporting that cultivates and promotes a better understanding of accounting, finance and business topics.
This is the 35th year that the NYSSCPA - the nation’s first state society of accounting professionals with more than 26,000 members – has hosted its competition to raise awareness and exposure of the outstanding work being done in business journalism.
The 2018 Excellence in Financial Journalism Awards will consist of 12 awards in nine categories (print, broadcast and online entries are eligible to be submitted to any category). Digital webcasts, podcasts, television and radio entries must be at least 45 seconds in length. A script or transcript with lead-in is strongly recommended but not required. Each submission in any category is limited to a maximum of five parts.
Audio – Exemplary coverage of a business, financial, or economic news story using radio, podcasts, or other online audio formats. Submissions may consist of one full-length audio feature or one audio package of up to five parts and must be at least 45 seconds in length.
• Audio: Small Media: This category is for audio submissions from organizations with 50 employees or less.
• Audio: Medium/Large Media: This category is for audio submissions from organizations with 51 employees or more.
Enterprise – In recognition of an exemplary business, economic, or financial story in any medium featuring in-depth research, journalistic initiative, reporting and creativity.
General Reporting – Exemplary coverage of a business, financial or economic news beat in a newspaper, magazine or online format.
Infographic – For outstanding graphic representation of information, data, or knowledge presenting complex financial information in a clear, concise, visual format to enhance a story narrative.
Local – Exemplary business reporting by a newspaper, magazine, television or radio station, or website focused around a geographic area whose primary audience are the residents in that area.
Opinion – For distinguished commentary, including editorials, columns, blogs, podcasts or video, on business, economic or financial topics.
Public Service – For laudatory reporting on a business, financial, or economic topic that will be judged on the impact on the public and the degree to which it benefitted the public good. Each entry may include up to five stories and must be accompanied by a description by the reporter or editor detailing this impact.
Video – Exemplary coverage of a business, financial, or economic news story in a television, live stream, or other video format. Submissions may consist of one full-length program or one video package of up to five parts and must be at least 45 seconds in length.
• Video: Small Media: This category is for video submissions from organizations with 50 employees or less.
• Video: Medium Media: This category is for video submissions from organizations with 51 - 250 employees.
• Video: Large Media: This category is for video submissions from organizations with 251 employees or more.
