The Eleventh Annual Forum of Investment Negotiators from Developing Countries will be held in Nairobi, Kenya from 7 to 9 February 2018.
This event will be hosted by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the South Center, and hosted by the Kenyan Investment Authority (KenInvest).
The Forum will address two broad trends that are transforming investment negotiations today:
• The development of multilateral and regional negotiations, and
• Expanding the scope of agreements to include a host of issues such as trade and other economic dimensions that were previously negotiated separately.
What do these trends mean for the role of developing countries in shaping new-generation treaties? How do these issues relate to linking investment to sustainable development? How will these trends change the structure of bilateral investment treaties? What is the most appropriate scope for these agreements? Should the negotiations be bilateral, regional or multilateral? Would it be more efficient to negotiate separate agreements, or should trade and investment be chapters of the same agreement? These are some of the challenges that will be addressed in Nairobi.
