Globally, insurers are getting rocked by climate change & disasters. Global insured catastrophe losses rose to over USD 112 billion in 2021 and catastrophe losses caused by natural disasters and extreme weather events such as deep winter freeze, floods, hurricanes, heatwaves and severe thunderstorms will only continue to grow. Plus! The pandemic has been at the top of our minds lately, and it has in one way or another resulted in a hardening insurance market. Currently, the industry is experiencing falling investment returns for insurers, increased frequency and severity of catastrophes, and high regulatory intervention and governmental pressures which is against the interests of insurers. These, coupled with the effects of the pandemic has resulted in higher preliminary estimates that reflect global economic losses from natural catastrophes and man-made disasters will continue to escalate. While floods and typhoons are a huge concern, climate change and rising temperatures will likely continue to exacerbate secondary perils, including wildfires which were seen in Southern California and Australia. Pay outs on catastrophe events continue to hit pre-defined parameters.
Risk management & modelling continues to cause high level of uncertainty as the region faces rapid increase in exposure concentrations, poor data quality, pricing and relatively short insured loss history. Insurers must prepare & protect themselves for further uncertainties in catastrophe insurance issuance and risk management in order to have a resilient and optimized strategy.
