The global economy isn’t out of the woods, despite the resilience of the U.S. and European economies. Join us as the team discusses the following topics:
• China’s domestic economic recovery has disappointed; households and private businesses have been reluctant to spend and invest, and fiscal and monetary stimulus has been only limited and targeted.
• The Asia-Pacific region leads most other parts of the world, but it will experience slower growth over the next year as exports lose momentum. Domestically, higher borrowing costs are challenging demand.
• Headline inflation is receding across most of the Asia-Pacific region, but underlying inflation is not yet on an entrenched downtrend. Central banks, including those that have paused monetary tightening, are on alert.
• Multiple risks challenge the region. Another supply-side shock to food or energy prices would send the global economy down a darker path, making a recession tough to avoid.
