The Bank Protection Act and other regulations require that a bank's Board of Directors appoint a Security Officer, who is responsible for developing and administering a current and effective institution-wide security program. Examiners are focusing their attention on the development of risk-based approaches to each of the bank's functions, including the security function. Traditionally, bank security programs have focused primarily on robberies, frauds, cameras and alarms. In today's environment, the bank's security program must also address policies, procedures, processes and practices to identify the security threats and vulnerabilities to an institution. Security Officers have become security managers and they are responsible for fulfilling an increasing number of risk-avoidance and loss prevention responsibilities.

The ICBA Bank Security Institute provides an in-depth training program that is specifically developed for the professional Security Officer who works for a community bank, regardless of the geographical location or size of the bank. The Bank Security Institute is designed to provide the Security Officer with critical information in order to meet regulatory requirements and provide strategic and tactical methods of security, robbery and fraud prevention and risk management.

In addition to training delivered by a nationally known security expert, this program provides the opportunity to become a Certified Community Bank Security Officer (CCBSO).
