This opening session will debate the extent to which the average long-term saver has regained confidence in the capital markets ten years on from the global financial crisis and whether the distribution of retail investment products is fit for purpose, with a focus on how policymakers and markets can support people to invest effectively to meet their future financial needs.

- What are the opportunities and challenges arising in an environment of low interest rates and demographic ageing?
- How has the culture within investment firms changed since the financial crisis? Can the introduction of a duty of care for brokers, dealers, and other intermediaries who serve and advise retail and retirement investors reduce the risk of harm to consumers by requiring firms to avoid conflicts of interest and supporting longer-term cultural change within firms?
- What can be done to improve fair and transparent outcomes for investors?
- As they gain greater popularity with investors - especially those in younger generations - how should Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) measures be defined? How should diverse investor views and needs be accounted for?
- What is the role of asset managers regarding corporate governance and in social policy debates?
- What role should sustainability play in driving longer-term decision making in asset management? What are the most effective mechanisms for encouraging innovation and overseeing adherenece?
