The banking systems in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe (CESEE) are generally dominated by European banks. Moreover, the operations of these European banks are often systemic in the host country but not material to the parent bank and thus the home country authority. Host countries in this position are referred to as “small hosts”. They face unique challenges whether they are inside the Eurozone, inside the EU or outside of the EU. The implications for cross border supervision and resolution are distinct in each of these three cases, with increasing asymmetries between home and host countries. During this conference, experts will analyze the consequences of recent EU reforms in the area of supervision and resolution from the perspective of small host countries in CESEE and come up with recommendations on how to best address these challenges.
