Food security has become a global growing concern. Trends such as expanding populations, changing food consumption habits and climate change, continue to put pressure on the global food system. Biodiversity is in crisis and alongside climate change, is considered a major planetary emergency. The loss of biodiversity is having a negative impact on food production and the World Economic Forum estimates that over half of global GDP is nature-dependent... the true figure could be much higher. With climate change, we have all become accustomed to the concept of reducing carbon footprint and working towards “net zero”, while the biodiversity crisis is not widely understood or discussed.
Food security and biodiversity concerns have led to the growth of the agri-tech industry. Research has suggested that the market is predicted to grow to $30-35 billion by 2025. Data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, the Internet of Things, and software as a service are all being used by agri-tech companies to challenge the traditional agricultural economy.
