25th e-Crime & Cybersecurity Middle East Summit
Securing a sensor-saturated world
The distinction between digital and physical is gone: a new breed of security leader is needed to combine physical security, IT security, OT security, product management security, and supply chain security
The disruption caused by COVID, significant though it is, has obscured more important and long-lasting trends that will challenge traditional cybersecurity as never before. It is easy to talk generally about ‘digitalisation’ without really looking at how profoundly it is re-making businesses across all sectors, from the smallest to the largest.
Small merchants are adopting e-Commerce models, using Cloud providers for all significant IT needs, and dealing with an explosion of digital payment models and channels.
Larger companies, facing similar changes in customer and supplier behaviour, are adopting not just these technologies but an extraordinary range of new digital devices that render the description ‘Internet of Things’ inadequate. It is much more accurate to say that we are entering a ‘world of sensor saturation’ that will transform entire industries.
To take just one example that intersects with many others, in insurance an ongoing IoT revolution will transform the business model and security: cars with sensors will track driver style and determine premiums; in health and life insurance, wearable sensors and fitness devices will perform a similar function.
These technologies have huge implications for the whole sector: for premiums, around discrimination, and a fundamental shift to the prevention of incidents rather than reaction to them.
Most immediately, this creates huge data flows between sensors and the business vulnerable to interception, both by those who wish to steal the data but also by those who wish to alter data to make fraudulent claims or alter premium-defining models. And it’s not just insurance: a similar pattern of profound change is occurring across industry. And traditional security will struggle to keep up.
The e-Crime & Cybersecurity Congress for the Middle East will take place online and will look at how accelerated digitalisation requires a new kind of security. Join our real-life case studies and in-depth technical sessions from the security and privacy teams at some of the world’s most admired brands
