Any transformation that happens faces challenges on the way. The extent of the challenge was demonstrated at the just-concluded G20 energy ministers’ conference in Goa, which did not manage to come up with a joint statement on the adoption of renewable energy, and instead just released a summary. People involved in the discussions said there was strong resistance to strong language in the communique about the phasing out of fossil fuels.
Two key issues will be debated and deliberated upon at this event. First, how do we ensure that most, if not all, of the additional energy demand that is generated till 2030, is met by renewable energy? And second, how do we ensure that the huge capacities of renewable energy that are getting installed, are able to find their way into factgories, offices and homes? These two issues are at the heart of all the transformation that is happening around renewable energy, even as New Delhi and the rest of the world seeks to battle climate change and reverse its rapidly accelerating effects. Within the ambit of these subjects, several key issues and questions will be addressed, including challenges in terms of installation, evacuation, transmission, adoption, storage, funding, technology development, local manufacturing, exports, and many others.
