This decade will prove critical for Belgium’s energy transition, as significant developments are pushing the industry to more than double the share of renewable energy sources in the electricity generation mix, increasing from 20.9% in 2020 to over 48% by 2030.

In 2022, the Belgian solar market reached 7.9 GW of cumulative PV capacity. This year, Belgium is forecasted to join the ‘GW club’ of markets, adding more than 1 GW annually, stimulated by the EU-wide process of deregulation and liberalization, incentives aimed at fostering the development of RE sources, and the evolving structure of Belgium’s energy distribution. However, constraints related to grid infrastructure may lead to the perpetuation of existing nuclear capacity in Belgium.
